Hatchery Takes Delivery of Trout, Celebrates with Youth Fishing Program for Children Ages 10 and Under

The Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park is proud to announce that it has taken delivery of 10,000 brown trout from the New York State DEC Bath Hatchery located in Steuben County. Families are invited to feed the young fingerlings and watch them as they develop and grow in the raceways at the Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park.

And, in an effort to introduce little ones to the sport of fishing, the Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park has stocked the pond that borders Courduroy Road with hundreds of trout for a free catch-and-release youth fishing program, offered daily through Friday, October 8. The program is available only while hatchery staff are on duty: Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until noon.

“The Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park is a popular destination for families, particularly during summertime. Offering youngsters a chance to learn proper fishing techniques is a wonderful way to teach them to respect nature,” said hatchery manager Ron Mitchell. “Throughout the course of this program, hatchery staff will be on duty to educate the children and to demonstrate and assist with proper catch and release methods.”

Fishing will be restricted to children 10 years of age and younger during designated times and only when hatchery staff are on duty. Children interested in participating should check in at the hatchery building prior to fishing. There is no charge to participate.

The Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park is operated by the Riedman Foundation which provides funding for staff, maintenance and operational support, and makes capital improvements. The Riedman Foundation has been engaged in this partnership with Monroe County since 2003 and also sponsors hatchery-related activities such as the annual opening day trout tournament, scout and school-group visits, and the catch-and-release program for children.
