April 1, 2010 Riedman Foundation Opening Day Trout Derby

Thousands will be enjoying unbelievable spring weather tomorrow as they celebrate the opening day of trout season in Powder Mills Park. Hundreds of these anglers are expected to participate in the seventh annual Riedman Foundation Opening Day Trout Derby to benefit the Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park. The derby will run from 7 a.m. until noon. Fishing will take place in designated areas of Irondequoit Creek within the boundaries of Powder Mills Park. The event is open to the public for a $5 fee.

Media interested in covering the derby will find anglers throughout Powder Mills Park, some arriving as early as 5 a.m. Derby Headquarters and the official Weigh Station will be at Powder Horn Lodge. To get there, take Park Road, bear left at Corduroy Road and then turn right onto Woolston Road. Travel down Woolston Road for a short while and Powder Horn Lodge will be on the right hand side. Anglers who haven't already signed up for the derby should arrive at Powder Horn Lodge between 6 and 7:30 a.m. to register.

The event celebrates the opening day of trout season. Anglers of all ages will be vying for more than $2,500 in quality merchandise and services, including the Bank of America Angler Award for Largest Brown Trout. The Bank of America Angler Award recipient receives a prize package that includes a four hour fishing charter for two on Lake Ontario. Awards for biggest catch will be presented at approximately 12:15 p.m. at Powder Horn Lodge.

This year’s opening day derby has been made possible by the Riedman Foundation. After being closed in 2002 due to Monroe County budget cuts, the Hatchery was reopened in late 2003 by John Riedman, area businessman and community philanthropist. The Riedman Foundation continues to fund, operate and make improvements to the 76-year-old Fish Hatchery.
