Spring Photo Opportunity

Thousands of brown and rainbow trout, raised at the Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park, will be released into Irondequoit Creek on Tuesday morning, March 30, 2010. The trout are being released in anticipation of the April 1 Riedman Foundation Opening Day Trout Derby to benefit the Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park. Photojournalists are encouraged to attend this unique photo opportunity which signals the start of spring. There will also be opportunity to interview hatchery staff and community volunteers, many of whom have been volunteering at the hatchery for decades.

Media interested in covering the release, should assemble at the Fish Hatchery building, 115 Park Road, between 7 and 11:00 a.m.

The Fish Hatchery at Power Mills Park expects is to release some 14,000 trout throughout the 2010 fishing season. The fish will be released in the stretch of Irondequoit Creek that passes through Powder Mills Park. The April 1 Opening Day Trout Derby to benefit the Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park will take place between 7 a.m. and noon. Applications can be downloaded at www.fishpowdermill.org.

For more information, or to schedule an interview with hatchery staff or volunteers, contact Ron Mitchell, Hatchery Manager at 585-586-1670.

The Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park was closed in mid-December 2002 due to Monroe County budget cuts. In late 2003, the Riedman Foundation stepped forward to partner with the County to reopen the 76-year-old hatchery. Under the arrangement, the Foundation provides the funding for staff, maintenance and operational support, as well as make capital improvements.
