Derby Now Features $500 Award for Largest Catch Thanks to Generosity of Bank of America
Bank of America has increased its support of the April 1 Riedman Foundation Opening Day Trout Derby to benefit the Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park. Beginning this year, $500 will be awarded to recipient of the Bank of America Angler Award. This is the first time that a monetary prize has been associated with the derby and it will be presented to the contestant weighing in the largest brown trout.
“Bank of America is pleased to join with the Riedman
Foundation in supporting the Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park,” says
Bank of America Rochester Market President John Pitton. “The Opening Day
Trout Derby is one of Rochester's first signs of spring, and we look
forward to joining the hundreds of sportsmen and sportswomen and their
families at this exciting event.”
Bank of America joined as a major derby sponsor in 2010. While the derby
has always recognized the contestant reeling in the largest catch, this
most prestigious category was renamed the Bank of America Angler Award
in 2010. Anyone registered in the Riedman Foundation Opening Day Trout
Derby is eligible to compete for the award. In 2007, the prize for
biggest brown trout was presented to the youngest-ever recipient of that
award—a 14-year-old angler—and, in 2009, 84-year-old Darrell Kilburn was
honored with the distinction.
“We are delighted by and so appreciative of Bank of America’s
generosity,” explained Derby Coordinator Suzanne Seldes. “Having such a
large prize should encourage additional participation in the benefit
derby and thereby allow more members of our community to better
understand the environmental importance of fish hatchery operations.”
A plaque to commemorate the winners of the annual Bank of America Angler Award will be on view during the derby at Powder Horn Lodge (Corduroy Road in Powder Mills Park) and throughout the year at the fish hatchery building on Park Road.

The Fish Hatchery at Powder Mills Park was closed in mid-December 2002 due to Monroe County budget cuts. In late 2003, the Riedman Foundation stepped forward to partner with the County to reopen the now 78-year-old hatchery. Under the arrangement, the Foundation provides the funding for staff, maintenance and operational support, as well as capital improvements.
