Annual Stocking Operations

Each year, with the assistance of numerous volunteers, fish are netted from the raceways, loaded into tanks and released into Irondequoit Creek. The Creek runs into Lake Ontario.  That means that in March, you could catch a fish in the creek that had been raised in the hatchery, released in a prior year’s stocking operation, swam into Lake Ontario and returned to the creek.  Approximately 7,500 rainbow trout are released from the hatchery in early spring.  An additional 3000 brown trout are released later in the season. Anyone interested in assisting with stocking operations is encouraged to notify a staff member.
